Enjoy some of our favourite walking routes right from our doorstep!
At the Bull i' th' Thorn we are situated in a great location for walking, especially with the High Peak and Tissington trail mere minutes away. The trails are accessible by crossing the main road and following the path across the field which passes through a gate and directly onto the High Peak trail near our sister pub, The Royal Oak.
The High Peak trail is a 17.5 mile former rail line that spans the Peak District countryside towards Cromford with great views and wild flowers along the way.
The Tissington trail is slightly shorter at around 13 miles and heads south to Ashbourne, it is great for walking and cycling and the flat even paths are perfect for all ages and abilities.
Monyash is picturesque limestone village, formerly a center for lead mining. This loop is just over 3 miles long and makes use of the footpath that heads straight through our campsite!
Flagg is another nearby village, slightly smaller and further afield than Monyash. It was predominantly a farming village, nestled in the countryside of the White Peak it was a perfect spot for agriculture. This route is about 4.5 miles.
Visit our popular sister pub, The Royal Oak, and explore the surrounding area via this 3 mile route. The route makes use of the High Peak trail that runs past the Royal Oak.
You could also stop off and have a drink or some delicious food while you're there!
Chelmorton, with it's iconic 'England' hill, is a picturesque farming village which can be explored via this 6 mile route.
Magpie Mine, near the small village of Sheldon, was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and one of the best surviving examples of an accurate 19th century lead mine. The mine has an interesting and troubled history including the so called 'Magpie Murders' which many people claim is why the area still has a spooky feel to it to this day.
Pomeroy dairy farm and campsite is just down the main road from us and is also accessible via the High Peak trail. This picturesque 4 mile route can be made even better by stopping by to sample one of their homemade ice creams mid route!
Looking for a longer walk? At just over 8 miles, this route takes you through Monyash and down the beautiful Lathkill Dale, following the river and it's waterfalls before heading back through fields to Monyash and back.
To make this route shorter you can always park in Monyash to cut the start and end of the route while still experiencing the beauty of the dale.
